A shortish
history of Real Musgrave & Pocket Dragons
A drive through the back roads of North Texas takes one
by pastures of longhorn cattle, working quarter horses and even the
occasional buffalo. But venture a little further into a serene valley of
oak woods and you will come upon an enchanted kingdom called Brae
Edenhall. This four-story contemporary "castle" is the home of Real and
Muff Musgrave and their magical, mischievous Pocket Dragons. In this
lovely setting Real creates the whimsical inhabitants of his world of
wonder. His wife Muff, his creative muse and business partner, and the
assorted Musgrave animals provide models and inspiration.
In
the beginning
 Real was
born in Texas in 1949 to Albert and Maxine. His fascination with dragons
started with a book given to him by his parents called 'The Big Blue
Fairy Tale Book'. As a child he loved language and was hooked on
dragons as soon as he was told that dragons invented it.
Real meet Muff his wife at Texas Tech University at a dance during his
first year. They married at 19 in their sophomore year.
Real used to sketch dragons on a pocket sized pad that he carried around
in the pocket of his favourite
English tweed jacket, while he went around Europe with muff. Hence the
name Pocket Dragons.
When they returned from Europe in 1974 Real opened a gallery where he
sold his fantasy artwork. His work consisted of Dragons wizards and
castles. Real was also the artist in residence at the Texas Renaissance
Festival for 14 Years.
Inspiration
In 1989
Real began sculpting the figures that we know and love as Pocket Dragons
today. These creatures are a combination of Real's early Pocket Dragon
sketches, his animals and the creative muse that his his wife Muff.
The original inspiration came from their beloved dog Flower.
She had a soulful face, was mischievous, helpful and good-natured. She
passed away in 1984. Real says that a little piece of her lives on in
every Pocket Dragon he sculpts. And by the way Real sculpts each and
everyone one he does not use assistants to help in his creations.
Gargoyles were modelled after Real & Muff's dog Shelby. When Shelby was
adopted from the Animal Shelter, Real fully expected her to have a
Pocket Dragon personality, like her predecessor, Flower. However, Shelby
turned out to be a gargoyle instead. Gargoyles are slightly podgy, slow
moving and convinced that they do all the work while everyone else has
all the fun. They are steadfast and loyal and very loving creatures.
As well as the personality of their animals Real's own individuality,
gentle, quirky warmth & humour also finds expression in the magic of the
little green creatures he creates. Real has often said that he wants to
grow up to be one of his wizards - grandfatherly types who can work a
hard day's Magic, then come home at night and read bedtime stories to
all the little creatures who live in the house. The Real Wizard loves
nothing more than a comfortable chair in the library, a good book, a cup
of coffee and a relaxing pipe of tobacco.
When Real talks about Pocket Dragons it's as if they live.
"Pocket Dragons are real to me" says Real, "as real as the cat sitting
by my drawing table when I'm working"
Here
they come
In 1988 Real
and his friend Hap Henriksen also from Texas meet with Bill
Dodd company chairman of Lilliput Lane. He liked what he saw and put
Real to work. The original 1989 release included 27 Pocket Dragons.
These pieces were manufactured at Lillput's facility in Stroke-On-Kent
in England.
To date approximately 300 Pocket Dragon figurines have been released.
Most Pocket Dragons for the US market and manufactured in China while
most Pocket Dragons for the European Market are manufactured in
Stroke-On-Kent. Real is the sole sculptor of all the creations and the
same moulds are used in both Chinese and English production.
Star
Struck
Then in
1998 the company BKN, which deals in children's entertainment made a
cartoon series of Pocket Dragons. In total there were 104 episodes made.
